OVIEDO, EUROPEAN SUPERCAPITAL
I would like to congratulate the pupil of La Gesta School, María Iglesias Alonso, on the success of the slogan: "Culture is the way. Oviedo, its destination."
There is a lot of competition for the European Capital of Culture of 2016. No candidate, nevertheless, is like Oviedo, a European cultural capital since its foundation. For two centuries only the Carolingian Aachen could have emulated it.
The acknowledgement of Oviedo´s worth would be a wise decision since it would show the lucid assessment Europe, in need of self-esteem, makes of itself and of the History of its origins. Europe´s raison d´être is indebted to that small Asturian kingdom, origin of a unique culture, reflected in its architecture, real seed of Europe. Today, Oviedo is a musical hub never imagined before by a medium size European town. It is also the seat of the prestigious "Fundación Príncipe de Asturias", with a yearly session very similar to that of the Swedish Academy with its Nobel awards, which exceeds in some aspects by incorporating a Sports Awards and an International Cooperation Award.
There is, at this moment of crisis, an argument I consider among the best ones for the European Capital for 2016. In Oviedo, there is huge popular support for this candidacy and for the social responsibility related to the welcome of thousands of Europeans in search of culture but, at the same time, this is the candidacy which spends the least in its promotion. At this moment of budget restrictions at all levels, Europe should appreciate and encourage modest projects such as this.
To sum up, choosing other candidates, worthy for other events and competitions, would be in contradiction to current budgetary restraints and a mistake for a Europe that would miss its original European vocation.
Nothing less, so, than what a young bright citizen said:
"Culture is the way. Oviedo its destination".
